For every person with a drinking problem, it’s estimated that at least five of their friends and family are affected by their alcoholic behaviour, however these stories are rarely told in the media and in films, TV and fiction.
Our new campaign #TheHiddenEffects – of alcoholism on family and friends is launching in January 2021 to highlight the effects of living with a problem drinker. Alcohol abuse and alcoholism within a family affects not only the drinker but also the family members, including the children and friends. Our recent survey shows that 99% of people who attend Al-Anon meetings were emotionally affected by their loved ones’ drinking, 66% were affected mentally, 63% were affected financially and 44% were affected physically. These effects include depression, anxiety, stress, domestic abuse and much more. The impact on the family members are often not fully understood and priority is given to ‘curing’ the drinker.
Case studies
These case studies share a story of how someone’s life has been affected by alcoholic behaviour, and how finding Al-Anon has helped them find some peace and hope in their lives. All names have been changed.
