Is Alateen for you?
If you are unsure whether Alateen is for you, it is best to start by asking yourself: Is, or has somebody’s drinking ever affected you?
Alateen could be for you if:
- You have or had a parent, close friend or relative whose drinking upsets you.
- You cover up your real feelings by pretending you don’t care.
- You dread holidays and special occasions because you are worried that someone’s drinking will ruin them.
- You tell lies to cover up what is happening in your home.
- You stay out of the house as much as possible.
- You are afraid to upset someone for fear it will make them drink.
- You feel nobody loves you or cares what happens to you.
- You are afraid or embarassed to bring your friends home.
- You think the drinker’s behaviour is caused by you.
- You make threats such as ‘if you don’t stop drinking, I’ll run away’.
- You feel that if the drinker loved you, they would stop drinking.
- You threaten or actually hurt yourself to scare the drinker into saying ‘I’m sorry’.
- You believe no one could possibly understand how you feel.
- Meal times are frequently delayed because of the drinker.
- You considered calling the police because of the drinker’s behaviour.
- You think your problems would be solved if the drinking stopped.
- You treat people unjustly because you are angry at someone else for drinking too much.
