Recording an Al-Anon podcast

How to record your own Al-Anon podcast

Creating a podcast as an Al-Anon member can be a powerful way to share experiences, strength, and hope with others who are navigating similar journeys. Here’s a guide tailored specifically for Al-Anon members who want to record their own podcast:

  1. Identify your purpose and audience: Determine the purpose of your podcast. Are you aiming to share personal stories, discuss recovery tools, provide support to those affected by someone else’s alcoholism or all of the above? Understanding your purpose will guide your content creation process. Your target audience will likely to be members of the public who do not know anything about Al-Anon, and who are either distressed by their own situation or know of someone who could be signposted to Al-Anon.
  2. Choose topics: Select topics that resonate with your personal experiences and align with Al-Anon principles. When sharing, avoid Al-Anon jargon, or talking about the Al-Anon Steps and Traditions, as that may confuse and put off members of the public. Instead focus on your story prior to Al-Anon. Whose drinking affected you? How old were you? How did their drinking affect you? (mentally, emotionally, physically or financially). Give example of stories that depict how you were affected in order for potential newcomers to relate. Once discussing your journey into Al-Anon consider including themes such as acceptance, boundaries, spirituality, self-care, and how you found out about Al-Anon.
  3. Prepare your content: Plan the structure and flow of your share in advance, and create a transcript allowing for authentic sharing. Draw from your personal experiences, Al-Anon literature, and recovery tools to provide valuable insights to your listeners.
  4. Send your transcript to GSO: Email your transcript to the PI Officer at GSO at pi@al-anonuk.org.uk. Your transcript will be sent to the Executive Committee for review and approval. Once it is approved, it will be sent to you for recording.
  5. Gather equipment: Recording a podcast is much easier now with all the technology available. If you have a smartphone, you can record a voice memo. If you are unable to record your own podcast or would like support, email the PI Officer at pi@al-anonuk.org.uk.
  6. Find a quiet recording space: Choose a quiet and comfortable space for recording to minimize background noise and interruptions. Select a room with minimal echo and ambient noise, such as a quiet corner of your home or a dedicated recording space.
  7. Record: Start recording once you’re set up and ready to go. Follow your approved transcript. Encourage authenticity and vulnerability when speaking to foster a connection with your listeners.
  8. Send your recording to GSO: Email your recording to the PI Officer at GSO at pi@al-anonuk.org.uk.
  9. Publishing your podcast: Your podcast will be sent to the Executive Committee for review and approval. Once it is approved, it will be published on the Al-Anon website.

By following these steps and staying true to your own experiences and insights, you can create a podcast that provides valuable support and inspiration to others affected by alcoholism.
